Sci-fi and fantasy fans sometimes get given a hard time but don't worry, reassures Heroes star Masi Oka, to be a geek is human.

Oka, who plays a computer/anime nerd in the hit sci-fi television show, should know.

He is a former digital effects artist, who was named both coolest geek and one of America's sexiest men by US publications last year.

Anime is a Japanese form of animation, either computer-assisted or hand-drawn.

“For me to be a geek is to be human,” Oka told AAP.

“To be a geek means you're passionate about something, whether that's comic books, water, architecture or whatever, and I think that shows our individuality and who we are as humans.

“I'd rather be passionate about something than apathetic about everything.”

Oka and Heroes co-star Milo Ventimiglia greeted hundreds of geeks - or rather fans - at a DVD signing in Sydney today.

Some had waited since 7am for the 1pm event to get autographs and photographs with their favourite Heroes.

Oka said he enjoyed connecting with viewers but Ventimiglia admitted he didn't really understand why people collected autographs.

“If I've ever been a fan of a musician or an athlete or an actor I think even when I was kid I never asked for autographs. I'd just walk up and say, *thank you, I like your work', and walk away, Ventimiglia said.

“The kind of clamouring for that celebrity I've never really understood so much.

“You've got to wonder what The Beatles must have felt like.”

The 31-year-old actor, who plays power-absorbing Peter Petrelli on the show, said he was also baffled over why some fans weren't satisfied when he shortened his signature to his first name.

“I'm thinking, 'why do you want my full name? What are you going to do with it? What credit card companies are you going to go to?',” he said.

The third season of Heroes is due to hit Australian television screens next month on the Seven Network.

Ventimiglia, who is dating another Heroes co-star Hayden Panettiere, promises season three gets back to what made fans originally fall in love with the series.

“It has tonnes of action and a lot of blood and a lot of the fun things and tricks - all the little sprinkles on top of the cake that people get excited about,” he said.
